The Courtship

You Don't Pay Us Until You've Met Her

Every other private matchmaker for men takes five figures before he's sourced a single woman. We put a card on file and charge it after you've met her.

Over a decade and nearly 47,000 real conversations.

The situation

Nobody is coming to introduce you

The people who used to do it are married and have stopped. The office is off the table. Your friends picked a side in somebody's divorce, or they just don't know anyone anymore. So there's an app open for twenty minutes before bed, and that arrangement has never once concluded on its own.

It costs more every year, and the cost isn't money. Access at fifty is not access at thirty-five. The circle shrinks and the people in it stay the same people.

What I'm looking for on your behalf is narrower than most men expect. A woman who's settled in her own life and isn't looking to be rescued from it. She has something of her own she takes seriously. And she'd be a good judge of you, which matters more than it sounds like it does, because you have to respect her judgment back.

That's the standard. It's the reason a real search takes as long as it does, and it's the reason I only run a few at a time.

The structure

Where your money sits

You sign, you send the wire, and then you spend ninety days finding out whether the firm you paid is running a search for you or matching you against inventory it already had.

We moved the money to the other end. A card goes on file at signing with written authorization. It is not charged until the first introduction has actually happened.

Exhibit 1 — Where your money sits. Every other firm is paid in full before anyone is sourced; The Courtship keeps a card on file and charges only when you meet her.

The risk

If she doesn't show, you aren't charged

She cancels, or she reschedules and it falls through. That isn't a delivered introduction. It doesn't bill and it doesn't count against your total. We present someone else within seven days and your term extends day for day.

She came to the firm on her own, sat for a verification interview before she was ever on our list, and isn't compensated for being there. Nothing of value moves from this firm to any woman you meet through it. So when she cancels, that's ours to fix.

Exhibit 2 — Who carries it if the meeting doesn't happen. If she cancels it isn't charged and doesn't count; if you cancel, that one counts.

"We're on both sides of the introduction. She came to us too."

A firm carrying a hundred clients cannot bill on delivery. It doesn't know when delivery happened, and it isn't in the room afterward. We sourced her, we verified her, we briefed her. That is the only reason we know precisely when an introduction has been delivered, and the only reason we can go back to her afterward and get an honest answer instead of a polite one.

The mechanism

What you're actually buying

Not the introductions. Anyone in this business can produce introductions.

Most men in your position have never had one honest piece of information about how they come across. Friends being kind, women being polite, and no way to tell the difference.

We brief both sides before you meet. Afterward I go back to her myself, and you hear what came back in writing, including the parts people don't say to your face. Then the brief for the next one changes because of it.

By the fourth introduction we know things about how you land that you don't, and the search is sharper for it.

Exhibit 3 — What runs for the whole term: the briefing, the introduction, the read in writing, and the next brief changed by it.

The proof

What the read actually looks like

This is the part no other firm can show you, because no other firm has it.

After every introduction I go back to her. What comes back gets written up and sent to you. Not a summary of the evening. What she actually thought, put into words you can use, with anything that would identify her taken out.

Here is the shape of one. The content belongs to you and to her, so it isn't on this page.

What the written read looks likeA facsimile showing the structure of the written read a client receives after each introduction. Four sections: what she noticed first, what landed, what didn't, and what we're changing in the next brief. Structure only. No client or member content appears.EXHIBIT 5What the read looks likeTHE COURTSHIP · WRITTEN READWhat she noticed firstWhat landedWhat didn'tWhat we're changing in the next briefStructure shown. No client or member content appears.Names, dates and quotations never appear in a read.

Every read is written from the same fixed set of questions, which is what makes the sixth one comparable to the first. That comparison is the thing you're actually buying.

The engagement

What it covers

Engagements are five figures. Where yours lands depends on the timeline you want and how much search the brief takes. You get the figure in writing before you sign anything.

  • A search run for your case, not a query against a list that already existed
  • A set number of introductions inside a set term, both named in your engagement
  • The briefing on both sides, so nobody walks in cold
  • The read after each one, in writing
  • The next brief built on the last read, for the length of the term
  • One business day on anything you send us
Exhibit 4 — The engagement, start to finish: signing, the three-day cancellation window, the first introduction where the card is charged, the read after each one, and the end of term.

Before any of it

What twenty minutes gets you

Nobody gets a search run for him on the strength of a form. There's a private conversation first. You talk, I listen.

The candidacy review

One page, in writing:

  1. Where a serious search would start in your case
  2. What it would realistically take
  3. What it would cost
  4. Whether you're a fit for the firm

It says so plainly. Sometimes it says no. The page is yours whether or not you engage the firm, and we take a small number of men at a time.

What we won't promise

Anyone who guarantees that is lying to you.

Ask any firm, including this one, whether they can guarantee you'll meet the person you marry. What can be promised is the work. Your engagement names a number of introductions and a term. If we don't deliver them inside it, we keep working at no charge until we do.

Questions

Asked before signing

When does a private matchmaker charge you?
Most firms charge at signing. We take a signed engagement and a card on file with written authorization, and charge after the first introduction has actually occurred.
What happens if she cancels the first introduction?
It isn't a delivered introduction, so it isn't charged and it doesn't count against your total. We present a replacement within seven days and your term extends day for day.
What if I don't want to meet the woman you present?
Then you don't meet her. It isn't a delivered introduction, it isn't charged, and it doesn't count against your total. The term doesn't extend for it either, because that one is your call rather than ours.
Can I cancel after I sign?
You have three business days. Nothing has been sourced in that window and nothing is owed. The search starts when the window closes.
How much does a private matchmaker for men cost?
Engagements here are five figures. Where yours lands depends on the timeline you want and how much search the brief takes, and you get the figure in writing before you sign anything. Across the category, prices run from a few thousand dollars for database services to well past six figures for bespoke search. The longer answer comes down to what a matchmaker actually costs and what the fee is buying: a search run for a short roster, or a database with a salesperson attached.
Are the women paid to meet me?
No. Nothing of value flows from this firm to a woman you meet through it. No stipend, no travel, no comped drinks. If you want flowers or a reservation handled we'll arrange it and bill it to you, because it's your gesture and not ours.
Do you work with men outside your markets?
Our core markets are Nashville, New York, Dallas, Miami, Toronto, Tampa, and Los Angeles. We also work with partner matchmakers in multiple countries, so if you're somewhere else the search just looks a little different.
Do you guarantee I will find a relationship?
Anyone who guarantees that is lying to you. What can be guaranteed is the work: a set number of vetted introductions inside a set term. If we don't deliver them, we keep working at no charge until we do.

P.S. If you're not approved for our free introduction offer, you'll still walk away with a personalized summary that will help you find your person...and whether or not you engage the firm. If you're comparing firms, take our offer with you and ask the others if they can match it with something better. If their answers beat ours, hire them.
